3 ways to take action when you hit the edge of your comfort zone
Creating and growing your own business will always bring you to an edge of your comfort zone somewhere …. Whether it’s figuring out the tech stuff, asking for sale, showing up on video, writing content, or feeling confident in communicating what you do, wherever you turn there’s a new challenge.
Many people don’t make it past the early hurdles, but with a little more self belief, support, and persistence, the world gets the benefits of talented people like you.
So as much as we’d like to find a fun easy way to do all of the things, from ideas to marketing and delivery, at some point you’re likely to hit some blocks. Some of these are going to be obvious … and others are harder to identify … often they’re deeper psychological challenges.
You’ll know when you hit one because it usually has a significant emotion attached to it … frustration, fear, overwhelm … or a physical response … avoidance, distraction, diversion … starting and not following through …
These are signs that you’re reaching the limits of what you know and can comfortably do. This is also a time when your body is telling you you have a choice.
Do you want this enough to find a way through, and believe you can do it, despite current circumstances?
Do you want to succeed at this really? Or do you just want to stay where it feels comfortable now?
Every successful entrepreneur you know has moved beyond their comfort zone. They have become used to the discomfort and continue to grow. Their success lies in recognising when they are coming up against the edge of their comfort zone, and welcoming it, instead of dwelling on the edge or withdrawing.
I’m not saying you should welcome the pain of anything new.
You always have a choice, and sometimes the discomfort is a reminder that maybe there is another way that suits you better AND still provides a way for you to get to where you want to be.
There are many ways you can adjust your mindset to help you make decisions and choose a way forward when you don’t feel like it … Here are my top 3.
Push through the time into the discomfort until your comfort zone stretches and it becomes comfortable. This isn’t sustainable or even attainable for some aspects of your business … but there is always going to be times where you are learning something new, developing new habits, and experimenting with where the edge of your comfort zone is …. So the question you need to ask yourself is “how much discomfort am I willing to accept until it becomes comfortable, or I decide there has to be a better way?”.
Go back to get clear on exactly where you want to go and be, secure in the knowledge that it is daligned with what you care about and how you want to feel in your business and in your life … and who you want to become … and create a roadmap based on that, which allows you to confidently take your next steps and your next, in alignment with your vision.
Shine a light on the obstacles are that are in the way of your advance, and find a way to dissipate those blocks so you can find new clarity, access, energy, and get that much needed momentum to get into flow.
All three of these have their place, and the one you choose will depend on your own clarity … or where it’s lacking, around -
what it is that is actually outside your comfort zone;
what it is you’re actually trying to overcome, how willing you are to get comfortable with discomfort;
how well supported you feel in taking those next steps;
how much trust you can place in your own instincts or emotions or physical signs; please
Or if when you look more closely you can see them as excuses … and that maybe there’s something else creating the schism …
I’ve created a free training to take you through 3 steps to alignment, which will help you identify what is at the heart of those feelings of resistance, emotion, and physical experiences when you get stuck, and get clear on what is true for you right now and shine a light on your next steps in the direction you want to take.
